John Mayer, still only 34 years old, admitted to NPR's All Things Considered that he should not have revealed details about his relationships with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson. In separate interviews with Rolling Stone and Playboy in early 2010, Mayer gave the magazines intimate glimpses into the time he spent with Aniston and Simpson. At the time, the interviews were big headline-makers and both Aniston and Simpson seemed to be annoyed and hurt that Mayer was so forthcoming about the relationships.
In hindsight, Mayer told NPR that he was trying desperately not to be boring in the interviews and that he ended up being "open but not honest" with the information that he revealed. Mayer attributes his behavior during those interviews to losing sight of what he was doing with his life. He implied that he had gotten caught up with the idea of his celebrity and lost sight of the fact that he was famous because he was a musician – not because he was dating famous women.
Mayer lamented the fact that he couldn't take back the words that he said, but he did point out that he now has an understanding of what went wrong and is sure that nothing like that will happen again. Perhaps he's learned somewhat of a lesson, as the NPR interview failed to reveal any details about his relationship with Taylor Swift, whatever it may have actually been.
Mayer's upcoming album, Born and Raised, is released today. He's expected to tour for the album once he fully recovers from recent vocal cord surgery, likely sometime in 2013.
