WHAT it’s about: Wannabe hair metal singer Chris Cole gets a chance to front his favourite band, Steel Dragon, after he out-wails the current lead at a concert. But can this former Steel Dragon tribute band leader keep his long-time girlfriend and his cool as newfound fame starts to go to his head?

HOW come you haven’t heard of (or just seen) it: This flick got pretty horrible press when it came out, probably because of the fact that Mark Wahlberg wears one hell of a goofy mop and eyeliner in it. Also, now that he’s all big and blockbuster movie-starring, Wahlberg seems to want to talk about it about as frequently as he actually wants to revisit the Funky Bunch.
WHY you need to watch it–immediately!
- Wahlberg is actually pretty great as Chris “Izzy/Crizzy” Cole. And he has more chemistry with Jen Aniston than most of her co-stars seem to. (Wait until you see the pair have a dance floor make-out with another lady to “Stranglehold” by Ted Nugent.)
- There is an amazingly cheesy success montage set to “Once in a Lifetime” by the Talking Heads.
- The costumes are hilarious, yet accurate representations of the type of stuff hair metal gods wore back in the 1980s. And God, the mesh ensembles Steel Dragon’s groupies are forced to wear.
- Steel Dragon’s drummer is none other than Jason Bonham, son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.
- It will take you back to a time when Timothy Olyphant was a “THAT GUY.”
- The credits sequence proves, yet again, Wahlberg’s distaste for his white rapper past. (In a behind-the-scenes blooper, the production crew puts on “Good Vibrations” as a joke in place of a Steel Dragon track and Wahlberg looks totally nonplussed.)
- Then again, one mid-movie scene features Wahlberg dropping some spontaneous rhymes. Trust me when I say you will definitely feel it (feel it).
- The soundtrack is way too good to be fake. If Steel Dragon was a real band, I’d pay BIG BUCKS to see their reunion tour, especially I was sure they were going to sing “We All Die Young” and “Stand Up and Shout.”
