Ronda Rousey: Burgeoning Hollywood Star | Daily Thoughts with ...

12 Feb

Ronda Rousey will be defending her UFC woman’s Bantamweight title next Saturday in Las Vegas against former wrestling Olympian Sara McMann. It will be the third title defense for the superstar who is immensely popular and entertaining. The focus on this fight has not been so much about her fighting accomplishments but more about her opportunities outside of the octagon. Rousey has been cast in two movies “The Expendables 3” and “The Fast and the Furious 7” and now has a leading role in the following movies: “Entourage” and “Athena”. As a result one must wonder how long Rousey will stay involved in MMA.

Rousey is becoming more popular outside of the cage then inside of it. Her last fight witnessed a multitude of boos and jeering for Rousey who refused to shake her opponents hand after the fight was completed. Her abrasive personality is a plus for her fighting career as we have seen fellow heels such as Brock Lesnar and Floyd Mayweather become hugely successful off of their bad character. However, the public must love you in acting to support your movies. Those who become unpopular in Hollywood tend to not have many opportunities presented to them considering the way to make money is to have a big following. As Rousey continues on her route to superstardom she must ensure long-term stability outside of the octagon but also maximize her in cage opportunities.

Rousey must remember that what got her to this stage is her popularity inside the octagon. She must realize that while she is becoming popular and gaining opportunities, the real money she can make is by retaining her title next Saturday. America loves a winner and if she can multi-task by both fighting and acting that is the best long-term road to success. Rousey is immensely popular but let’s not forget she is not Jennifer Aniston or Gwyneth Paltrow. She is entertaining and fun to watch, but her real stardom lies within the octagon.

Rousey has the ability to be the first ever-best female fighter of all time and will only ensure that by continuing her rise to dominance. She is dominating and vicious and loves to fight. She is making a name for herself like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson have done and she is the face of woman’s MMA. As she continues this ascension let’s hope she sticks around long enough to enhance her legacy to an all time great, not just a groundbreaking fighter.
